Food Server Attendant – Hospital Dietary Food Service

Department: Dietary / Food Service

Reports To: Dietary Supervisor / Head Dietitian


The Food Server Attendant is responsible for the timely and accurate serving of patient meals in accordance with prescribed diets, portion standards, and hospital food safety protocols. The role ensures that each patient receives the correct meal tray based on medical and nutritional requirements, while maintaining high standards of cleanliness, courtesy, and efficiency.


Meal Preparation & Service

  • Assemble and distribute patient meal trays according to diet instructions from the Nutrition & Dietetics Department.
  • Ensure proper portioning, presentation, and temperature of food items before delivery.
  • Deliver meals to patients courteously and assist those who require help with food handling.
  • Retrieve used trays after meal service and return them to the dishwashing area.

Dietary Compliance & Accuracy

  • Double-check meal trays against diet slips to ensure correct food items are served.
  • Report any patient complaints, refusals, or issues with meals to the Dietary Supervisor.
  • Handle special diets (diabetic, low sodium, renal, soft diet, etc.) with strict compliance to instructions.

Sanitation & Safety

  • Maintain cleanliness of food carts, utensils, and service areas.
  • Follow hospital infection control, hygiene, and food safety standards.
  • Dispose of food waste properly and comply with sanitation guidelines.

Coordination & Support

  • Work closely with dietitians, nurses, and kitchen staff to ensure smooth meal service.
  • Assist in food preparation and portioning when necessary.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Dietary Supervisor.

Work Conditions

  • Hospital-based dietary department.
  • Shift work may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Frequent interaction with patients, nurses, and dietitians.
  • At least High School Graduate; additional training in food service or nutrition is an advantage.
  • Preferably with experience in food service, hospital, or dietary care environment.
  • Basic knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and hygiene practices.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and pay attention to details (especially with diet orders).
  • Good communication skills and a courteous, patient-oriented attitude.
  • Physically fit and able to push meal carts, carry trays, and stand for long periods.
