The CSI Specification Writer is responsible for developing and maintaining Construction Specifications Institute (CSI)-compliant specifications for commercial kitchen, laundry, and waste management systems for high-performance, code-compliant, and operationally efficient projects. Working closely with designers, consultants, engineers, architects, and project managers, the Specification Writer ensures equipment is specified accurately, clearly, and in accordance with relevant codes and client requirements.
1. Specification Development
- Prepare detailed, clear, and accurate CSI-format specifications (typically MasterFormat Division 11) for food service, laundry, and waste management equipment
- Customize and edit manufacturer-supplied specifications to suit project-specific needs
- Coordinate with BIM/CAD teams to ensure alignment between drawings and specifications
- Incorporate technical, operational, and sustainability standards into all documentation
2. Coordination and Collaboration
- Liaise with internal design and consulting teams to integrate client brief, workflow, equipment load schedules, and utility requirements
- Work with project stakeholders including architects, MEP engineers, and contractors to clarify specification intent and resolve coordination issues
3. Quality Control and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with relevant building codes, local authority regulations, HACCP guidelines, and sustainability certifications (e.g., LEED, Estidama)
- Perform quality checks on tender documents to ensure consistency between drawings and specifications
4. Documentation and Standardization
- Maintain and update firm-wide specification templates and libraries to reflect current best practices, codes, and technologies
- Track revisions and version control across multiple project submissions
5. Technical Support
- Provide technical support during design, tender, and construction stages regarding specified equipment and materials
- Respond to contractor RFIs and submittal reviews related to Division 11 specificationsDegree or diploma in Engineering, Architecture, Industrial Design, or related technical field
- 2+ years of experience in writing CSI/MasterFormat specifications
- Strong knowledge of commercial kitchen, laundry, or waste management systems
- Familiarity with construction documentation practices, equipment standards, and local/international codes
- Proficiency in MS Word (especially styles, templates), Bluebeam, and Autodesk tools
- Degree or diploma in Engineering, Architecture, Industrial Design, or related technical field
- 2+ years of experience in writing CSI/MasterFormat specifications
- Strong knowledge of commercial kitchen, laundry, or waste management systems
- Familiarity with construction documentation practices, equipment standards, and local/international codes
- Proficiency in MS Word (especially styles, templates), Bluebeam, and Autodesk tools
Preferred
- Knowledge of Revit or AutoCAD for cross-reference checking
- Experience working with government, commercial, or institutional projects (e.g., hospitality, healthcare, education)
- CSI CDT (Construction Documents Technologist) or CCS (Certified Construction Specifier) certification is a plus
